Sam Altman Expresses Concerns About AI’s “Superhuman Persuasion” Abilities،

Earlier today, OpenAI co-founder and current CEO Sam Altman wrote a post on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) explaining how he expects artificial intelligence to be able to “superhuman persuasion long before it was superhuman in general intelligence.” » In June 2023, Elon Musk also warned about humans’ growing reliance on AI and how we might forget to operate the machines that developed AI, sparking concerns among those who follow religiously the field of AI innovation.

What is superhuman persuasion?

In his latest tweet, Altman claims that AI’s superhuman persuasive ability could lead to “very strange results.” According to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, superhuman persuasion could “involve an extraordinarily effective or powerful form of persuasion.” Additionally, the chatbot says, “it might suggest a level of persuasion skill or technique that goes beyond what is generally considered normal or expected.” While this seems like a generic answer at best, Snapchat’s My AI has an interesting take.

According to Snapchat’s My AI, superhuman persuasion is “the ability to influence others in highly effective and convincing ways.” It involves the use of various techniques and strategies to twist and subvert beliefs, opinions, and resulting actions. When asked to elaborate on the techniques, My AI mentions them like telling a story, building relationships, appealing to emotions, using persuasive language, etc. “It’s about finding the right approach to connecting with and influencing others,” adds My AI.

Using AI to spread misinformation is the main concern

If we combine this information with Altman’s tweet, we begin to see the underlying concern: manipulation through misinformation. Earlier this year, cases of websites publishing articles generated using AI were reported, raising questions about the authenticity and accountability of AI-generated information. Additionally, we also heard about the AI’s hallucination habit, which strays from the topic of discussion and starts generating absurd responses.

While AI has found use cases in sales, customer support, troubleshooting, etc., there is no denying that it can be used to generate partly true or manipulated narratives that when they are distributed on the Internet, could be believed by many. to be true. While there are both positive and negative aspects associated with the development of AI and its use cases, it is worrying to see the pioneers of the technology raising questions, which is also reflected in the comments section of the tweet.
