{"id":9339,"date":"2023-11-15T18:19:11","date_gmt":"2023-11-15T15:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/9339\/ex-ufc-fighter-julie-kedzie\/"},"modified":"2023-11-15T18:19:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T15:19:13","slug":"ex-ufc-fighter-julie-kedzie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/?p=9339","title":{"rendered":"Ex UFC fighter Julie Kedzie pledges brain for CTE research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ex UFC fighter Julie Kedzie pledges brain for CTE research\u060c<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former UFC fighter Julie Kedzie has dedicated her brain to post-mortem research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma and concussions.<\/p>\n<p>Kedzie competed 29 times as a professional, winning 16 and losing 13, before retiring from MMA in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>She has suffered from depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, impulsivity and lack of sleep \u2013 all symptoms of CTE \u2013 since ending her career.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline inline-photo full\">\n<figure><picture><source data- media=\"(min-width: 376px)\"><source data- media=\"(max-width: 375px)\"><img class=\" lazyload lazyload\" data-image-container=\".inline-photo\" height=\"320\" width=\"570\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"photoCaption\">Julie Kedzie has dedicated her brain to CTE research. <cite>Getty<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt seems like a completely normal thing,\u201d Kedzie told BBC Sport of the decision to donate his brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been hit in the head a lot, so I might as well see what&#8217;s in there and make some use of it for the data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kedzie, who has been involved with leading women&#8217;s MMA organization Invicta Fighting Championships since her retirement, is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in the growth of women&#8217;s MMA.<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old is one of the first women to devote her brain to CTE research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there is any way I can continue to progress in this field [of mixed martial arts] and advance the cause of women, then yes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to give back to women in this sport because there are all these studies on the brains of male athletes and there might be something completely different from a female athlete&#8217;s perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, Australian rules footballer Heather Anderson became the first professional athlete to be diagnosed with CTE.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson, who retired from the sport in 2017, died last year aged 28.<\/p>\n<p>His family donated his brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank (ASBB), to better understand his death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ex UFC fighter Julie Kedzie pledges brain for CTE research\u060c Former UFC fighter Julie Kedzie has dedicated her brain to post-mortem research into chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head trauma and concussions.
