Again, there is always a chance that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 would be another minor and iterative step in the grand scheme of foldable phones' evolution.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open is easily the best foldable phone we've seen it so far, with spectacular construction and design. It also has a very capable camera, great performance and battery life, nice screens, and a very attractive price. It's a phone that brought a lot to the table right out of the gate, leaving us truly intrigued as to how a potential second-gen OnePlus Open might work.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 against OnePlus Open differences:

Galaxy Z Fold 6

OnePlus Open

Possibly a new design with a wider aspect ratio and thinner titanium construction

One of the best foldable phones of 2023

The same camera system as the last two generations

A very powerful camera system that rivals many standard flagships

More storage and memory options

Lots of RAM and native storage, but only one storage/RAM version

Qualcomm's best chipset on board

A powerful but older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset

Battery probably smaller

A large 4,805 mAh battery

Slower loading

67W super-fast wired charging

Contents:

Design and size

Can Samsung beat OnePlus?

According to rumors, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 could get a thinner and lighter construction compared to its predecessor, possibly made of titanium. Rumor has it that Samsung has reverse-engineered its competitors' foldables (Huawei Mate X3, Xiaomi Mix Fold 3, Honor Magic V2) to find ways to save space. We're talking about a potential thickness of just 11mm, which is a superb result, on par with the OnePlus Open which measures 11.7mm in its folded state.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 6Compared to Samsung's predecessors, Samsung finally introduced a gapless design, but did not fix the atrocious display crease that runs through the screen like a canyon. We hope that Galaxy Z Fold 6 won't feature a display crease, but that would require a major hinge redesign, which we hope to get.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open is an extremely lightweight and well-built foldable phone with no corners between the bottom and top panels, as well as virtually no display creases, making for a very pleasant user experience.

We expect that the OnePlus Open will remain the largest, and above all, the widest foldable.

From the point of view of resistance, the OnePlus Open is simply rated as an IPX4 device, meaning it is splash-proof only and any serious contact with water could damage it. During this time, we expect that Galaxy Z Fold 6 being an IP68 water and dust resistant phone, even allowing you to submerge the foldable underwater for up to 30 minutes.

Each of them will have some sort of unique characteristic. For the OnePlus Open, it's the extremely useful ring switch, a signature quirk of OnePlus. At the same time, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will definitely support Samsung's useful S Pen, and if the rumors are to be taken seriously, the phone could finally boast a silo to hold the accessory in place.

Display differences

As mentioned, the OnePlus Open will probably be the phone with the largest screen. It has a 7.8-inch internal display, which has a near-perfect square aspect ratio, while the external display measures 6.3 inches diagonally. Both displays are AMOLED, with HDR support, dynamic refresh rate of up to 120Hz for an ultra-smooth experience, and high peak brightness on both displays. Plus, no display crease, which is a huge advantage over foldables.

At the same time, we do not have much information about Galaxy Z Fold 6the specific display properties of . However, some things will be certain. Of course, there will be two displays, both Dynamic AMOLED, with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for a smooth scrolling experience.

Performance and software

The power of Snapdragon

There is a good chance that the next Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which is currently the best available for Android phones. This is the same chip that powers the Galaxy S24 Ultra as well as the Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 in the United States. There is a good chance that Samsung will rely entirely on the Snapdragon 8 generation 3 and does not rely on its Exynos chips at all. This has been the case with previous Galaxy Z Fold phones, so it makes sense that this trend will continue.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It was the best chipset available at the time of OnePlus Openand that really helped the foldable to fly simply.

From a memory perspective, we suspect that Galaxy Z Fold 6 will arrive with at least 12GB of RAM, as well as 256GB of storage, but there will likely be 512GB and possibly a 1TB version of the phone. Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open can be yours in just one version, with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.

Camera

THE OnePlus Open comes with a pretty decent camera setup. It has a 48 MP main lens aided by a 48 MP ultra-wide lens and a 64 MP telephoto lens with 3X optical zoom. The main camera uses a large 1/1.43″ stacked Sony LYTIA-T808 sensor. An innovative pixel layout makes this sensor capable of capturing more light and providing much greater dynamics than more conventional camera sensors. As far as foldable cameras come and go, the OnePlus Open is quite capable, all things considered.

Elsewhere, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will come with the following configuration:

50 MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and OIS;

Secondary 10MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, OIS and 3x optical zoom;

12MP ultra wide angle with f/2.2 aperture.

If this one looks familiar, that's because it is: Samsung is reusing the same general camera setup from the Galaxy Z Fold 4. We think the bulk of possible improvements will come on the software side.

Audio and haptic quality

THE OnePlus Open delivers spectacular sound, with a three-speaker spatial setup that also supports Dolby Atmos. The phone delivers punchy, rich sound that is a pleasure to listen to. Samsung has never been a slouch when it comes to audio, so we generally expect the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to impress too.

Haptically, the OnePlus Open offers excellent haptics thanks to its new motor on the X axis. It remains to be seen if the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be significantly better than its predecessor.

Battery life and charging

heated battle

We don't know what Galaxy Z Fold 6 Battery capacity might still be limited, but rumors say we could see a total battery capacity of 4,600 mAh on the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open packs a large 4,805mAh battery inside, which offers surprisingly decent battery life compared to foldable and candybar phones. Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the OnePlus Open fared much better when it came to battery life, so the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a long way to go.

In terms of charging, it will also be quite difficult to surpass OnePlus. The latter supports 67W super-fast wired charging, which fully charges the phone in just 43 minutes. Rumors say that Galaxy Z Fold 6 could reiterate the 25W wired charging of its predecessor, so a potential 80-minute full charge is on the horizon. There will, however, likely be wireless charging on board.

Specification Comparison

Specifications

OnePlus Open

Height and weight

Unfolded: 153.5 x 132.5 x 6.1 mm

Unfolded: 153.4 x 143.1 x 5.8 mm (Emerald Twilight) | 153.4 x 143.1 x 5.9 mm (Voyager Black)
Folded: 153.4 x 73.3 x 11.7 mm (Emerald Twilight) | 153.4 x 73.3 x 11.9 mm (Voyager Black)
Weight: 245gr (Twilight Emerald) | 239gr (Voyager Black)

Colors

–

Emerald Twilight, Voyager Black

Display

Main screen: 7.6″ internal, HDR, 120 Hz

Cover screen: 6.4 inches external, HDR, 120 Hz

Main display: 7.82″ AMOLED, 2440 x 2268, LTPO 3.0 (1-120 Hz), sRGB, DCI-P3
Cover screen: 6.31″ AMOLED, 2484 x 1116, LTPO 3.0 (1-120 Hz), sRGB, DCI-P3

Processor

Snapdragon 8 generation 3

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Adreno 740

RAM, storage and price

12GB/16GB
256GB/512GB/1TB

16 GB LPDDR5X RAM
512 GB UFS 4.0

Software

A 6.1 user interface, Android 14

OxygenOS 13.2 based on Android 13

Cameras

Main: 50 MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture and OIS
Telephoto: 10 MP secondary telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, OIS and 3x optical zoom;
Ultra-wide: 12 MP ultra-wide-angle with f/2.2 aperture.

Main: 48MP, f/1.7, Sony LYT-T808 1/1.43″ sensor, 24mm equivalent, OIS, EIS, PDAF+CAF
Ultra-wide: 48 MP, f/2.2, Sony IMX581 1/2″ sensor, 114-degree field of view, EIS, AF, macro
Telephoto: 64MP, f/2.6, OmniVision OV64B 1/.2″ sensor, 3X optical zoom (70mm equivalent), 6X in-sensor crop, 120X maximum zoom, OIS, EIS, AF

Internal selfie camera: 20MP, f/2.2, 1/4″ sensor, fixed focus
External selfie camera: 32 MP, f/2.4, 1/3.14″ sensor, fixed focus

Battery size

~4600mAh

4,805mAh

Charging Speeds

25W wired charging, wireless charging, no charger in the box

SUPERVOOC 67W charging (charger in box)

Summary

THE OnePlus Open is certainly one of best foldable phones to beat right now.
