{"id":32852,"date":"2024-03-25T14:19:58","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T11:19:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/32852\/instagram-users-taken-aback-by\/"},"modified":"2024-03-25T14:19:59","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T11:19:59","slug":"instagram-users-taken-aback-by","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/?p=32852","title":{"rendered":"Instagram users taken aback by Meta&#8217;s restrictions on political content (including \u201csocial topics\u201d)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Instagram users taken aback by Meta&#8217;s restrictions on political content (including \u201csocial topics\u201d)\u060c<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It&#39;s been over a month since Meta announced it would stop recommending political content and users are furious.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2024\/03\/instagram-users-outraged-by-app-limiting-political-content-ahead-of-elections\/\" class=\"external\">Ars Technica<\/a> reports that Instagram users started complaining about X\/Twitter after discovering that Meta had started limiting recommended political content <span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">by default<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In February, when the announcement was made, Meta said:<\/p>\n<div class=\"quote quote-auto nolinks\" style=\"width: 100.0%\">\n<p>We want Instagram and Threads to be a great experience for everyone.  If you decide to follow accounts that post political content, we don&#39;t want to come between you and their posts, but we also don&#39;t want to proactively recommend political content from accounts you don&#39;t follow.  We are therefore expanding our existing approach to how we treat political content: we will not proactively recommend political content on the Instagram and Threads recommendation surfaces.  If you still want these posts recommended to you, you will have a control to see them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fast forward to the present day.  Many users are complaining about this on X\/Twitter and are not happy that their accounts are set to limit such posts by default:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Instagram implemented a new \u201climit political content\u201d feature in Settings and made it default for tons of accounts.  The timing of this feature seems very suspicious to me, but here&#39;s how to fix it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wPofpiFwZk\">pic.twitter.com\/wPofpiFwZk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Michaela Okland (@MichaelaOkla) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichaelaOkla\/status\/1771240275685372341?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 22, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPolitical content may mention governments, elections, or social topics that affect a group of people and society as a whole,\u201d reads the Instagram settings page for these types of posts.  Even if you&#39;re tired of politics and just want to see another red cat\/dog\/panda <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/tag\/video\/\"   title=\"video\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">video<\/a>, the &#8220;&#8230;or social issues that affect a group of people&#8230;&#8221; part is extremely vague and could encompass&#8230; well, everything.  change the setting and don&#39;t let Meta&#39;s algorithm decide what is a political post (and what isn&#39;t) that you should or shouldn&#39;t see, users can go to Instagram&#39;s menu for \u201csettings and activities\u201d in their profiles and update their \u201ccontent preferences\u201d.  There is a &#8220;Political Content&#8221; menu (the last item under a list of &#8220;suggested content&#8221;) where users can set their preferences for what content is recommended in their feeds.<\/p>\n<p>Choosing &#8220;do not limit&#8221; means &#8220;you might see more political or social topics in suggested content,&#8221; the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/wikidollar.net\/tag\/app\/\"   title=\"app\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">app<\/a> says.  By default, all users are set to \u201climit,\u201d which means \u201cyou may see fewer political or social topics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This affects suggestions in Explore, Reels, Feed, Recommendations, and Suggested Users.  This does not affect the content of the accounts you follow.
