Unwanted colors appear at the top and/or sides of the screen when the phone is locked. This issue appears when the Always On display setting is enabled. Once the screen is unlocked, the screen color returns to normal. You can see if disabling AOD helps by going to Settings > Display > Locked screen and deactivate Always show time and information.

The problem appeared on Pixel 8 Pro units running the stable version of Android 14 and the Android 14 QPR1 beta; some cite this as a sign that the problem is with the hardware and not the software. And because pink and yellow hues appear on the Pixel 8 Pro and not the Pixel 8, it’s possible the bug has something to do with the variable refresh rate on the Pixel 8 Pro which uses LTPO to reduce the refresh rate from 120Hz to 1Hz depending on the content on the screen. THE Pixel 8 does not have this technology.

When the Pixel 8 Pro screen goes down to 1Hz and AOD is enabled, pink and yellow tints appear on the screen.

Less active content such as messages, emails or photographs reduces the refresh rate of the phone and in a dark environment, when the screen goes into low refresh mode, unwanted tints are more likely to appear. This particular Redditor says: “I’m sure this isn’t a flaw, just a limitation of current technology.” Most Pixel 8 Pro Users suffering from this problem would disagree. If this happens to you, call Google and request a replacement if you are unhappy with your current device.

Don’t hang up your call to Google until you get an RMA number and the promise that a new unit is arriving.

Another Reddit user sums it up perfectly. “This is caused by the screen refresh rate. As soon as the refresh rate drops to 1Hz, which happens a few seconds after the AOD appears, the problem occurs. The darker the ambient light. , the more you can see it. Just enter a dark room, turn on AOD, wait a few seconds and you will be able to see it, no matter what wallpaper or theme you are using.

Get a replacement Pixel 8 Pro because this problem is not a sure thing. A Pixel 8 Pro Google informed the user that a pink/yellow tint change was expected. It’s funny, but we didn’t see Google mention this at the Made by Google event earlier this month to showcase the Pixel 8 double. Two Reddit subscribers said Google told them the only thing it could do was replace their faulty device. Pixel 8 Pro units.
