For years, there has been talk of Samsung preparing a new type of foldable phone. Last year, there was talk that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 would have a buddy in the form of a tri-folding Galaxy smartphone. Well, that didn't work. Now, as we gear up for the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, talk is back, hinting that Samsung could finally launch the first-ever triple-foldable smartphone. In a recent article on X, tipster Revegnus (via Tom's guide) shared that Samsung is set to unveil a “triple foldable” phone this year. The insider suggests that one of the main drivers of Samsung's triple ambitions could be competition from Huawei.

Rumors are circulating that Samsung will add a triple to its lineup this year. While Huawei is almost certain to release a tri-fold in the second quarter of this year, from Samsung's perspective, it can't afford to miss out on the “world first” title.

– Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) February 13, 2024

Previous rumors suggested that Huawei could be close to unveiling the world's first triple foldable smartphone later this year. This news reportedly prompted the Korean tech giant to take action. To claim the bragging rights of being first to market, Samsung needs to step up its game. However, even though Samsung lags behind Huawei in launching a tri-fold smartphone, the restrictions imposed by the Chinese giant in the United States and the inability to use Google applications could give Samsung the upper hand. The Korean tech giant could give many customers a first try with a three-piece foldable phone, even if it chooses to launch it next year.

Rumors, patents, and even demos of Samsung's display arm have been surfacing for years, making no secret that Samsung is actively exploring this new foldable form factor.

Samsung's “Flex In & Out” concept of a three-way foldable screen

A tri-fold design delivers on the promise of an expansive screen, almost like having a tablet in your pocket. However, this innovation has its challenges, particularly in terms of the size of the device. We'll have to wait and see how and if Samsung addresses this issue.

The new Galaxy Z Fold and Flip models usually take the stage every summer, usually around the end of August. It remains a little uncertain whether they will be joined by a new foldable this year.

After all, this isn't the first time rumors have hinted at a tri-folding Galaxy smartphone without it actually becoming a reality. However, it's likely that we'll actually see more than two foldable devices this year, with Samsung possibly preparing for a more affordable Galaxy Fold.
