If you write for a living or are a student, Grammarly is probably one of your best friends online. Grammarly will help you find and correct grammar and spelling mistakes and the paid version of the app and website will give you real-time writing suggestions to improve your report. For $12 per month, the paid version of Grammarly will even alert you to accidental plagiarism.<\/p>\n

With many analysts talking about a future where generative AI bots replace human writers, it makes sense that Grammarly would use AI to help subscribers improve their writing skills. This week<\/a>, Grammarly announced it was laying off 230 employees to focus on \u201cthe AI-powered workplace of the future,\u201d according to the company. Grammarly said: \u201cThis move supports Grammarly\u2019s vision of bringing AI-powered responsible writing support to people and workplaces everywhere. Millions of people and thousands of businesses use Grammarly to achieve more through better writing.<\/div>\n
In a memo to employees shared in a blog post<\/a>Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, CEO of Grammarly, wrote: \u201cAs we increase our focus on creating an AI-enabled workplace and deepen our technical investments in AI, we will need 'a different combination of abilities and skills. We also need to rethink our organization to improve it. the quality and speed of collaboration \u2014 and this involves, among other things, a restructuring of roles and the co-location of certain teams.<\/div>\n

The executive made clear that the layoffs were not a cost-cutting measure and said Grammarly's financial position remained “strong.” Instead, a downsizing is underway to prepare Grammarly for the future of AI. People who leave the company will receive a minimum of 3 months of base salary. This increases for team members who have been with the company longer. U.S.-based team members who leave the company will have the option to continue their health insurance benefits for up to six months. <\/p>\n

Grammarly also helps those leaving the company find a new position by offering “stipends or access to individualized career coaching, resume review, and other transition services.” The company will also create a list of \u201cavailable talent\u201d for the public to view. The list will include names, specialties and \u201ckey results\u201d for future employees to view. And those who leave Grammarly can keep their company-issued laptop for personal use.<\/div>\n

Looking ahead, it's easy to see Grammarly hanging its hat on AI. CEO Roy-Chowdhury wrote: \u201cWe see huge opportunities as every individual and business begins to harness the power of AI. For nearly 15 years, we've been building a product that helps millions of people every day, makes teams significantly more productive, and is already used by employees at 96% of Fortune 500 companies. We will build on this foundation to bring even more more value to our customers.
