We can challenge each other openly and honestly; an embodiment of the 'tough love' culture of the team that is vital to helping us all perform at our level. But more importantly, James is a true friend who you can count on, not only in times of success but also in times of difficulty.

Allison's news comes on the cusp of a new Formula 1 season, with Mercedes looking to get back to winning ways after securing just one race victory in the last two seasons.

Before the current regulations were introduced in 2022, the team won eight constructors' championships in a row in an unprecedented run of dominance.

In 2021, as the team's winning period came to an end, Allison took on a less active role when he was named technical director while Mike Elliott took on the role of technical director.

Following the team's struggles in 2022 and early 2023, Elliott and Allison swapped positions to increase Allison's involvement in front-line technical decisions before Elliott left the company at the end of the season.

Allison said the challenge his team now faces in catching up with a Red Bull team that won 21 of 22 races last year is one of the main reasons he wants to stay in his role.

“It’s actually a lot of fun!” he told reporters via video call. “It's not as much fun as winning, that's absolutely true. But you kind of have to love the sport as a whole and the sport as a whole involves getting licked when you haven't done a pretty good job.

“I think one of the things to admire about Red Bull's current performance is that they have stuck to their task with determination for quite a long period of time in the wild and are now enjoying the fruits of that labor well placed. And it's far from unpleasant to be in this position, as long as the team collectively believes they're making the right decisions to try to re-establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

“There's a lot of fun to be had in it. You don't expect it to be linear or anything, it's still a roller coaster where you have hope, you get slapped and hit by the racing gods, then you gather your skirts again to have “Another push. And I hope this journey upwards is steep and strong and safe. But it will be a lot of fun trying to drive it at any pace possible to give our rivals a good old fight. “

Catching Red Bull

<picture></picture>
James Allison has taken over the role of technical director at Mercedes. Charles Coates/Getty Images

Mercedes will launch its new car on February 14 before a three-day pre-season test in Bahrain starting on February 21 and the first race of the season on March 2.

Asked if his team was in a position where they could reasonably challenge Red Bull this year, Allison replied: “I think Toto made the comparison between climbing Everest and the challenge we have before us. And I think that's a pretty apt comparison, because Everest is the biggest challenge, but it's nevertheless something that is possible to achieve.

“And I think that's how we look at it as something that fits who we are, absolutely a challenger rather than a favorite. But nonetheless, we hope we've done a good job with the new car, We hope we've addressed some of the shortcomings that were so publicly exposed last year.

“And there's also one little thing that comes to mind, which is that the rules themselves have a much clearer upper limit on the lap time that these cars are capable of producing. of the older generation of cars, and the more love you give them and the more work you put into them, the faster they become, seemingly endlessly.

I think if you look at last year, you see, from the start to the end of the season – even though Red Bull's dominance was almost total and they didn't look vulnerable even in the last race of the season. year. – If you look at the big picture, it's a grid that's gradually compressing, and all the cars in Q1 were kind of crushed to within a second of each other. It's not a coincidence.

“It's a trend that happened starting in 2022, continued into 2023, and I think it will continue to show up in 2024 as the gains become more and more asymptotic. And then I think besides us hopefully doing well, I guess it's going to be relatively busier near the top of the grid this time and last time.

“And there, if we're good enough to be in that fight, then the operational elements – the excellence of the driver, the reliability of the car, the skill of the crews that maintain it – all those things start to potentially become factors differentiation and, hopefully, here too we have cleaned up and freshened up performances that were sometimes not great last year.”

Hopes for the new car

Although the new Mercedes car – dubbed the W15 – has yet to hit the track, it has been running in the virtual world in the team's loop driving simulator.

Allison said many of the issues that hampered drivers last year appear to have been resolved, but he's not optimistic about the car's competitive potential until he sees what teams rivals have produced.

“It's impossible at this time of year to be anything other than apprehension, excitement, fear… it's just that those are always the emotions you feel and I I imagine that even at Red Bull, after such a good year, performance, they will not sleep peacefully in their bed either because no one knows what the others will offer them.

“However, what we hope is that some of the nastier features on the back of our car will be a little more user-friendly for us, and that driving the car will be more enjoyable. This is all in simulation, but nevertheless, we have reasonable grounds to believe that we have made gains in this area.

“And then on top of that you have all the normal maintenance items of just making it lighter, giving it more downforce and hopefully getting a little bit of lift on the side of the power unit with calibration level by tinkering that they are still in progress. able to do it according to current rules.

“So time will tell, but it will be interesting nonetheless, because we saw some things that we knew were problems, we hypothesized about why those were problems. And we fixed those reasons. It will be interesting to find out how accurate we were with this diagnosis.

Technical director James Allison signs long-term deal to remain at Mercedes، Laurence Edmondson, F1 editorJanuary 18, 2024, 10:16 a.m. Close • Joined ESPN in 2009• F1 journalist accredited by the FIA since 2011 Mercedes technical director James Allison has signed a new “long-term” contract to commit his future with the team to the next set […]

[6
9378,442,9377,1252,2921,3352,2174,502,3220
post-20547","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-sports","tag-allison","tag-deal","tag-director","tag-james","tag-longterm","tag-mercedes","tag-remain","tag-signs","tag-technical
["GET
