Throwing in the towel: Paris mayor quits X and says some nasty stuff on her way out\u060c<\/p>\n
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, can’t take it anymore and announces that she will leave X\/Twitter. What a hard blow for Elon Musk, will he ever recover from it?<\/p>\n
On her way out, Anne Hidalgo managed to say some nasty things, calling X\/Twitter a \u201cgigantic global sewer\u201d that was \u201cdestroying our democracies\u201d by spreading \u201cabuse\u201d and \u201cdisinformation\u201d (via Reuters<\/a>).<\/p>\n She published a long tweet about her decision in French and English, here is the English version:<\/p>\n Why I’m leaving Twitter.<\/p>\n I have made the decision to leave Twitter.<\/p>\n Twitter, far from being the revolutionary media that initially made information accessible to as many people as possible, has in recent years become a formidable tool for destroying our\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/3CcHQVnz5p<\/a><\/p>\n -Anne Hidalgo (@Anne_Hidalgo) November 27, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n If one stops and thinks about the current shape of the City of Love and compares it to what it looked like, say, 50 years ago, it turns out to be a major irony that none other than the mayor of Paris is angry about the sewers. Please note, this is the same mayor whose administration decided in 2023 to abandon the plan to combat the rat problem in Paris and to opt instead for a more peaceful \u201cstate of coexistence\u201d with rodents. Rats are responsible for the massive proliferation of the bubonic plague which wiped out nearly half of the city’s population in the 14th century. Back to Hidalgo’s beef with X\/Twitter:<\/p>\n Whether it’s manipulation, disinformation, incitement to hatred, harassment, anti-Semitism and open racism, or brutal attacks on scientists, climate scientists, women, environmentalists, liberals and all those of good will who wish to engage in a peaceful political debate and in an increasingly complex world, the range of abuses is infinite<\/p>\n<\/div>\n She then accuses X\/Twitter of interference in the elections: \u201cNot to mention the daily external interference in the electoral processes, aimed at destabilizing our democracies and undermining their image and their sovereignty\u201d.<\/p>\n Speaking of elections, last year Anne Hidalgo was a presidential candidate in France and she received 1.7% of the vote. It is the lowest result<\/a> that a presidential candidate from the center-left Socialist Party (PS-S&D) has never won in the first round.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
