Forget iMessage! Samsung and Pixel can should celebrate: Apple\u2019s MagSafe is coming to Android\u060c<\/p>\n

For those who don’t know, Qi2 (pronounced “chee two”) is the new wireless charging standard announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in January 2023. Although it was announced ago has been so long, it’s only expected to launch a year later (read: very soon). Technically, we should start<\/a> seeing Qi2 chargers in December.<\/p>\n

What makes the next generation of Qi2 wireless chargers for Android exciting<\/a> is that Apple (yes, that<\/span>Apple<\/span>) played a big role in the realization of Qi2. Tim Cook & Co did something weird: they decided to share Apple’s original MagSafe technology openly and for free with WPC (and therefore Android). While I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be a hostage situation, Apple shares… whatever it is isn’t something we see every day, or ever. But this time, the message (i) from Cupertino is different.<\/p>\n

The MagSafe-enabled Qi2 wireless charging standard for Android (and iPhone<\/a>) is a win-win for everyone. The iPhone gained USB-C, and now Apple is (more or less) giving Android access to MagSafe, and everyone should be happy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I’m here to tell Android users that they should be excited, and that’s because MagSafe is one of the best iPhone\/Apple features in recent years. Android users will love it once phone makers start adding magnets to the back of Android phones.<\/div>\n

Now it’s up to Android phone makers to add magnetic wireless charging to their phones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It is important to note that not all Qi2 chargers will be magnetic. Instead, there will be two types of Qi2 chargers \u2013 one of them will feature Apple’s Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), reaching a maximum power of 15W (that’s MagSafe’s). The second type of Qi2 chargers, based on the “Extended Power Profile” (EPP), won’t support MagSafe but you’ll get double the charging speeds, at 30W.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In my opinion, thanks to the expertise and technology behind Apple’s MagSafe, the next generation of Qi2 wireless chargers for Android will bring improvements in two key areas\/ways.<\/p>\n

The first is linked to wireless charging efficiency<\/span>. In case you didn’t know, wireless charging is not only slower than wired charging, but it’s also much less efficient because the phone heats up more and is often misaligned with the charger. This is why you sometimes wake up to find that your phone is dead, even though it was supposed to be fully charged (and wireless).<\/p>\n

As for heat dissipation, while Qi2 (based on MagSafe) won’t necessarily keep your phone cool when charging (compared to the current version of Qi), its magnetic nature means you can opt for a magnetic charger with a built-in cooling fan. With the current version of Qi chargers, you can only do this with a static charger sitting on a table. In theory, cooler temperatures during grief should preserve your phone’s battery health longer.<\/p>\n

I don’t suppose the magnetic technology on the back of Android phones will be called “MagSafe.” But we’re not here to talk about the name of this awesome feature. As far as I’m concerned, it might be called GoogleGum or SamGlue… Actually, no. I take that back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

MagSafe accessories are one of the iPhone’s most practical and fun selling points in recent years: Android users will love them<\/h3>\n

However, it is the convenience factor<\/span>which I will now address via a long list of examples of MagSafe accessories that should make all the difference for those using MagSafe compatible Qi2 chargers. First of all, my favorite iPhone accessory is the MagSafe battery<\/span>, which attaches to the back of my iPhone and charges it magnetically. The reason the MagSafe Battery is a must-have for me is because it allows me to continue using my iPhone 13 mini without worrying about its mediocre battery life.<\/p>\n

And to those who say “I can just get an external battery” instead of paying $100 for Apple’s MagSafe battery, I advise you to wait until you try MagSafe. It’s a bit like the transition from wired to wireless headphones<\/a>. You won’t want to go back. In fact, there are excellent, larger (in capacity) and cheaper alternatives to Apple’s original MagSafe battery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
