OpenAI has been on a roller coaster ride. First, they fired Sam Altman, saying he wasn’t upfront in his communications, appointing Mira Murati as interim CEO. Then, under pressure from investors and employees, they tried to reinstate Altman but refused the changes he demanded, leading to a stalemate. The company then elected its third CEO, Emmett Shear, who demanded an investigation into what went wrong and why Altman was fired in the first place; Meanwhile, Altman joined Microsoft. Finally, today OpenAI confirmed the return of Sam Altman.<\/p>\n

On November 22, 2023, OpenAI stated via its official X (formerly known as Twitter) that the company had agreed in principle to the return of Sam Altman as CEO. In addition, OpenAI also decided to remove the old board of directors, which was not competent enough to run the company, according to the letter signed by the employees. Sam will return to the company under the leadership of a new board of directors, consisting of Bret Taylor as chairman, Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.<\/p>\n

In response to this tweet, Greg Brockman, the former chairman of the board of directors of OpenAI, wrote: \u201cWe will come back stronger and more united<\/a> than ever. \u00bb Altman himself took to his X account, sharing how much he loves it. \u201cWith the new board and Satya\u2019s support, I look forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with msft.\u201d [Microsoft]\u201cadded Altman.<\/p>\n

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also emphasized that the change would lead the company to more stable, better informed and better governance. In other words, Nadella doesn’t seem to have a problem with Altman, Brockman and the team leaving the company to return to their original positions. Additionally, Microsoft will benefit from OpenAI’s advancements. So it’s a win-win situation for the company whether Altman stays or leaves his role as CEO of OpenAI.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, OpenAI interim CEO Emmett Shear also spoke about his X account, saying the solution took 72 hours of intense work. Shear believes that bringing back Altman and creating a new board is the right path for the company, and that it should “maximize safety” while “doing good by all stakeholders involved.”<\/p>\n

New board will appoint more people soon<\/h2>\n

According to a report from The Verge, the new board will appoint a new board of up to nine people who will “reset OpenAI’s governance.” Additionally, Microsoft, being the company’s largest investor, also wants to have a seat on the board of directors to participate in all decisions.<\/p>\n
