Samsung’s TM Roh on why some Galaxy AI tasks must be on-device, not cloud-based (also, AI is coming to wearables)،
Samsung's Roh Tae-moon, also known as TM Roh, current president and head of the Mobile Experience business at Samsung Electronics, released a “Welcome to the era of mobile AI» editorial on the Samsung website.
In this one, TM Roh says developing the Galaxy S24 was “the most rewarding time” of his career.
As an engineer, I have witnessed many examples of incredible innovation, but AI is the most transformative technology of the century. Few engineers have the chance to participate in a project with such seismic potential. This brings big changes, not only for Samsung and the mobile industry, but for all of humanity.
The Big Boss says AI is a “revolution” when integrated into phones and predicts mobile devices will become “the primary access point to AI”.
Except that, TM Roh reveals that the Galaxy AI suite is also coming to Samsung wearables:
[…] We're already planning Galaxy AI's next steps beyond smartphones – optimizing it for different device categories across various services. In the near future, select Galaxy wearables will use AI to improve digital health and usher in a whole new era of expanded and intelligent health experiences. Samsung will continue to enrich and expand Galaxy AI experiences across categories through collaborations with more leading AI partners.
AI tasks on device or in the cloud
Speaking more about Galaxy AI and AI in general, TM Roh emphasizes that “there are challenges and responsibilities to take into account”. Indeed, AI models in training can still produce inaccuracies and discussions over intellectual property rights continue. Companies must work together seamlessly to shape AI experiences, ensuring users can trust and reliably use their enhanced capabilities. Additionally, improving security and privacy standards is essential in this new era of data-rich mobile experiences.
This is one of the reasons why we adopted a hybrid approach combining on-device and cloud-based AI. In addition to ensuring seamless use, this allows users to limit certain features to work entirely on the device, giving them greater control over what they do with their data. We remain committed to improving the security and privacy of Galaxy devices by providing users with transparency and choice.
TM Roh concludes by stating that in this new era of mobile AI, “it’s no longer about what any phone can do, but what individuals can achieve with the right tools.”
