Samsung Galaxy S24 vs Galaxy S23: What are the expected differences?
One of the biggest and most obvious differences between the Vanilla model and the Plus model in Samsung's lineup has always been the screen size. This year is no exception. THE Galaxy S24 features a slightly larger 6.2-inch AMOLED display (compared to its predecessor), while the Galaxy S24 Plus comes with a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. Larger screen sizes result in thinner, more uniform bezels. The resolution is respectively FHD+ or 1080 x 2340 and QHD+ or 1440 x 3200 pixels.
Both phones feature LTPO panels that allow them to dynamically switch the display refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, and Samsung has increased the peak brightness of all S24 models to 2,600 nits. We need to test this claim in our lab, so stay tuned for concrete numbers very soon.
Design-wise, unsurprisingly, these two look identical except for the size. THE Galaxy S24 Plus is just an enlarged version of the S24, more or less. Finally, both models feature flat screens and the frame curves ever so slightly where it meets the rear glass for better grip.
Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus colors:
- Cobalt Violet
- Amber yellow
- Marbled gray
- Onyx black
- Jade Green (Samsung.com exclusive)
- Sapphire Blue (Samsung.com exclusive)
- Sandstone Orange (Samsung.com exclusive)
There's not much difference between these two when it comes to design, as we've already told you. If you make a purchasing decision based on design, only one thing matters: size. THE Galaxy S24 measures 147 x 70.6 x 7.6 mm (5.79 x 2.78 x 0.30 in) and weighs 268 g (5.93 oz), while the Galaxy S24 Plus measures 162.3 x 79 x 8.6 mm (6.24 x 3.00 x 0.30 in) and weighs 233 g (6.95 oz). Let's see if there are any other differences hidden deep between these two devices.
Performance and software
Twins
Unsurprisingly, both the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus come with the latest Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The chip has the “for Galaxy” moniker, meaning it is slightly overclocked and optimized to work with the S24 series. Samsung has also redesigned and optimized the cooling system, so heat dissipation should be better on these new flagships.
On the software side, there are many improvements. Samsung is jumping on the AI bandwagon and this year we have Galaxy AI, powered by a hybrid on-device and cloud system. This AI aims to make your life easier and offers very interesting features, such as the ability to translate voice calls, voice and text messages in real time, transcribe audio, search interactively in applications, 'get grade summaries and more. View our full Galaxy S24 reviews for a deep dive into all these exciting new AI features.
The software update situation has changed dramatically, likely in response to the Pixel 8. Samsung will now offer seven years of major OS updates with the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus. To illustrate this, here are all the Android versions that the S24 and S24 Plus will receive:
- Android 15
- Android 16
- Android 17
- Android 18
- Android 19
- Android 20
- Android 21
Camera
Same old, but with a twist

THE Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus feature identical camera systems, with three cameras on the back and a punch-hole selfie camera on the front. Here is the full recap:
- 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide camera, 120˚ FOV
- 50MP OIS F1.8 wide camera, 85˚ FOV
- 10MP telephoto camera, 3x optical zoom, F2.4, 36˚ FOV
- 12MP F2.2 front camera, 80˚ field of view
This may seem disappointing, but as we all know, computational photography is king these days. And with the help of the recently announced Galaxy AI system, both phones should produce better photos (compared to their respective predecessors). Samsung promises improved low-light performance, which will result in sharper, brighter and smoother nighttime photos and videos. There is intelligent gyroscopic magic, supported by AI algorithms that distinguish between your movements and those of the object to provide better stabilization.
The algorithms behind color representation have also been optimized and Samsung says you should expect more realistic colors from your photos and videos. We will test this as soon as possible and include samples for your viewing pleasure. Again, the key point to remember here is that the camera system is identical on both phones, so you can't use that as a reason to choose one model over another.
Audio and haptic quality
There are no major stereo system upgrades on either Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus. The same goes for the haptic engines on both phones; there is no need to upgrade them, as the latest generation already offers excellent haptics and audio quality. A slight difference could come from the size difference between the two devices. The biggest Galaxy S24 Plus could be more resonant and bassier due to the greater space available for sound waves. But of course we'll have to wait and hear for ourselves.
Battery life and charging
Advantage Plus
The largest size of Galaxy S24 Plus gave Samsung the option to fit a bigger battery, and with a bigger screen, that's also a necessity. Samsung managed to slightly increase the battery capacity of both models, but the Plus' advantage is rather obvious. Vanilla Galaxy S24 comes with a 4,000mAh battery cell inside, while the bigger sibling takes things up to 4,900mAh, very close to Ultra territory.
Even accounting for the larger screen, the S24 Plus will likely have better battery life than the smaller S24, so stay tuned for our battery and charging tests as they will be added soon. Speaking of charging, the Plus supports faster wired charging with up to 45W of power, while the S24 is stuck in the past with the 25W we know from its predecessor.
