Samsung trademarks “Ironflex” foldable display tech for upcoming Z Flips and Z Folds

Samsung's fleet of foldable phones has come a long way since the original Samsung Galaxy Fold debuted with a disastrous turn of events. Today, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 are among the toughest foldable phones in terms of a foldable screen. It appears Samsung wants to build even more confidence and resilience into its foldable devices by dropping an internal “Ironflex” display that is expected to debut with the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 this year.

The trademark filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Services (KIPRIS) dated January 3 describes “Ironflex” as a “foldable OLED display panel” that can be used on foldable smartphones but also on Foldable portable video display monitors and foldable tablets.

Unfortunately, the branding document fails to provide any information on what exactly the “Ironflex” foldable OLED panel does. However, the name that seems too marketing-y is a reference to a better foldable display panel that can give an edge to the foldable display technology used today.

As noted, Samsung had a disastrous turn of events with the original Samsung Galaxy Fold. The screens on the review units started to break and the hinges were not able to hold the dirt. Neither the screen nor the display was able to resolve the “creases” that resulted from folding and unfolding the phone.

Today, the South Korean giant is at the forefront with one of the best foldable phones on the market – the latest being the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5. With “Ironflex” display technology becoming known recently, we could see the technology in the works as soon as this year. The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are expected to be due this summer, making it the contender to add “Ironflex” to its upgrade list, if not more.
