Apple may or may not be gearing up to launch its Vision Pro headset early next year, but it appears the market is slowly taking off. We’ve been waiting for the VR revolution for a while, and we’ll probably wait a little longer, but things are still moving in the right direction.

One of the main issues, in my opinion, was and still is the overall weight and bulk of these headsets. When Google introduced its AR glasses in 2022, I was very excited because it was a practical design that could actually work.

Unfortunately, the Iris project no longer exists. However, there are dozens of startups trying more or less the same concept. I remember trying a pair at TCL’s startup at IFA 2022. Meanwhile, VR or mixed reality headsets are still quite heavy, and early reports from people testing the beta VisionPro underline the same conceptual disadvantages.

You need a powerful hardware platform to run them, so you either need to install such a platform on the device itself or install a cable. Both solutions are far from optimal; there are of course also wireless systems, and they are getting there, but things are still moving slowly.

And then there’s the problem of developing apps and games for these AR/VR headsets. Somehow there just aren’t enough cool games and/or apps. I don’t know if the concept itself is stopping people from adopting it widely or if it’s all the problems combined. But today I decided to count the RV chickens, and I know it’s not spring yet, but whatever. Let’s see how many people own a VR/AR headset.
