While the result is obviously pleasing for Spurs, on an individual level, it was Wembanyama who once again grabbed the headlines.

His box-core score aside, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft delivered a vicious dunk that left many fans with their jaws on the floor.

San Antonio’s Devin Vassell drove the ball to the hoop before distributing the ball to Wembanyama.

The Frenchman jumped and reached Miami’s Thomas Bryant to slam the ball for a thunderous dunk.

It was just one of many stunning moments as Wembanyama scored for Spurs.

The only player who came close to matching the rookie’s point total was Vassell, who scored 21 points while no other San Antonio player scored more than 11.

“I’m still learning how to do certain things defensively, defending positions, for example,” he said.

“I’m really learning a lot and also trying to expand my tools in defense,” he added.

Wembanyama said he felt he and the team were developing a mutual understanding.

“I think we are on the right track. We still have a lot to learn about ourselves and our teammates, but we are on the right track,” he said.

“Personally, I try to apply what the coach says. I’m learning a lot, a lot of new things, and I think it all depends on our individual sacrifices,” he added.

Considered one of the most exciting talents to enter the league in years, Wembanyama said he has been impressed by how quickly his teammates have adapted to his skill set, well beyond the standard for such a tall player.

“For most of my short career so far, my teammates have had to learn to play with me because sometimes I know they are surprised to see me do certain things,” he said.

“But the surprise of coming here is that I’m now playing in the best league in the world, and the guys are learning faster. I feel like we already have a connection, all of us, and I’m in really grateful,” he said.

San Antonio’s regular season opener is at home on October 25 against Dallas.

As for the Heat, Jamal Cain was their most impressive player on the court with a double-double thanks to his 24 points and 10 rebounds.
