iOS 17.1 breaks iPhone 15 wireless charging on some GM vehicles،

But just like the game where you hit a mole with a mallet and another one pops up, no sooner has Apple solved the problem with BMW vehicles than some GM vehicle owners are complaining that after installing iOS 17.1 on their iPhone15 combined, they can no longer use the onboard wireless charger to charge their devices. One difference between this bug and the one that affected charging on BMW wireless chargers is that the issue affecting GM-made vehicles does not disable the NFC capabilities of a iPhone15 device.
On Redditseveral posts noted that the bug was causing iPhone15 series models to charge wirelessly for 10 seconds before turning off. As an article from “caduceus26” says: “Glad to know it’s not just me. My iPhone 12 Pro Max worked perfectly (every time) in my 23 Chevy Traverse. I upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro Max about 6 weeks ago. there is and functionality broke as described in other comments: charge for a few seconds then stops – turning the case on or off gives the same results. I am currently on iOS 17.1.1 and have done all updates since purchasing the phone on 10/8/23.”
On the Apple Discussion Forumuser “ctw” says: “After upgrading my iPhone 15 Pro to 17.1 yesterday, my phone now charges for 10 seconds and then stops charging in my wireless car charger. Before the 17.1 update, I had no problems with the phone in the car. I tested two home wireless chargers and they work fine and don’t stop charging.”
Complaints even arrive on the GM-Trucks forum. “Silvr_62” says: “I have a 2022 Silverado 2500 High Country with wireless Apple CarPlay. I use a iPhone 15 Pro Max. It worked perfectly until I updated my phone to iOS 17.1. Now wireless charging no longer works. It will start charging first, but after 5-10 seconds it will stop. My iPhone charges fine with other wireless chargers.”

“Silvr_62” tried the following: “

  • 1. Hard Reset iPhone
  • 2. Checked the infotainment software update.
  • 3. iPhone case removed.
  • 4. I deleted my truck from CarPlay and removed my iPhone from my truck’s infotainment.
  • 5. Re-paired my iPhone with my truck and re-enabled CarPlay.

None of the steps above resolved the issue. And those who have the problem say that neither iOS 17.1.1 nor the first three iOS 17The .2 beta versions fixed the issue. GM models mentioned in the published complaints include the Chevy Bolt EUV, Chevy Traverse, GM Silverado, GMC Sierra and others.

Apple could include a fix in a future iOS 17.2 beta and the stable version of iOS 17.2 (which should be released before the end of the year). Or, iOS 17.1.2 may be released specifically to address this issue with GM vehicles.
