Apple is reportedly testing iPhone 16 Pro with a punch-hole cut-out،

The iPhone 15 series is the latest and we’re still a year away from the next-gen iPhone 16 series, but that hasn’t stopped rumors from circulating the internet. According to tipster Majin Bu, Apple is likely testing an iPhone 16 Pro model with a punch-hole design instead of the much-acclaimed Dynamic Island.

Apple is testing a new design that might not see the light of day until the iPhone 17 series, although Bu says we’ll have to wait until March next year to get confirmation. Upgrading to a punch-hole cutout would give the iPhone 16 Pro models more screen real estate, but that’s the case with the challenges ahead, keeping the dynamic island seems like a likely option.

Why, you ask? The current Dynamic Island not only has aesthetic value but offers iPhones its functionality. The notch houses the front camera, the dot projector and the Face ID module, among other sensors. This means that if Apple were to standardize a punch-hole notch on future iPhone series, Apple would have to make room for all the sensors that fit inside the dynamic island.

A Korean publication The Elec has claimed that the Apple iPhone 16 Pro could get an under-screen Face ID which would somehow solve the problem mentioned above. The Pro’s notch can easily accommodate the front camera. However, the efficiency of everything below the screen suffered and I’m sure Apple won’t take that kind of risk.

Apple could test the design with an iPhone 16 Pro and a punch-hole cutout, but that doesn’t mean the phone will launch with it. Samsung and Apple are known to test various prototypes before finalizing one and even then, it is being refined until it is ready to serve the market.

Having a perforated cutout would mean a larger screen real estate. Although Apple plans to use Face ID under the screen and a punch-hole, this is planned for 2025 with the iPhone 17 series, according to DSCC’s Ross Young. The first non-Pro iPhone to benefit from an under-display implementation is the iPhone 19 in 2027 if we follow DSCC’s iPhone display roadmap.

However, in case the old pace proves true, we could see a hole on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max followed by a standardized hole on the iPhone 17 series.
