Apple is preparing to move from mini-LED technology to OLED with the iPad Pros. It looks like 2024 will be the year of a massive transition for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pros. The slates will also see an upgrade to Apple’s 3nm M3 chipset if the predictions prove true.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming iPad Pro OLED will see some of the biggest changes, although he refrained from sharing any timelines. We’re hoping for 2024, according to Jeff Pu’s latest investor note.

It turns out that both slate variants will adopt the same LTPO backplane as the iPhone 15 Pro series. These OLED panels offer much better energy efficiency and image quality. Apart from this, we might see built-in ProMotion technology that allows the upcoming iPad Pros to support a 120Hz refresh rate that drops down to 1Hz as needed.

Apple is expected to ship 6 to 8 million units next year. Note that we have heard of shipments of up to 10 million, which is still lower than the shipments of the mini-LED versions. This could likely be due to the high price of these OLED units which would otherwise make the 12.9-inch iPad Air a lucrative choice for customers, which explains the weaker dynamics.

Moving on, we have a 3nm Apple M3 chipset to power the iPad Pro OLED. For the uninitiated, this is a major upgrade over the M2-powered iPad Pro. Compared to Geekbench 6 multi-core tests, the iPad Pro with M2 achieves 9,577 while M3 has a multi-core result of 12,085 points, which is a significant jump.

As new iPad Pro OLED models drop next year, we expect price drops across the existing lineup, which should make the iPad Pro M2 a better buy. As usual, we’ll have to wait a few months before we get any concrete information on launch and availability, so until then, keep your fingers crossed.
