It’s not often you see promising technology that has the potential to change people’s lives, and the Humane AI Pin is an example. Humane says the AI Pin, a wearable device, harnesses the full power of artificial intelligence in an entirely new conversational, screen-free format. In 2023, a regular internet user might have heard of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that speaks as if it has a mind. He can answer queries, explain concepts, and has a dozen other conversational attributes. However, we still need a screen to interact with it, at least in its basic form.
What is the Humane AI Pin?
Humane has created a screenless but interactive device that communicates with users via sound and lights. It is a hybrid between a voice search engine, a mini projector that relays results based on user queries or requests, and a camera that can see and recognize objects in the real world. However, it has a touch area for manual activation instead of voice assistants that rely on an activation phrase. Additionally, it is a standalone device that, together with powerful software and the Internet, drives users’ AI experiences.
How it works?
The usable device is a combination of two parts: the battery booster and the computer (which houses all the sensors and the Internet modem). Both pieces have built-in magnets that can attach to the sides of a piece of fabric, like a jacket or t-shirt. Users can get more than one battery booster to keep the device running for days, although the company promises a day’s battery life on a full charge.
How can you interact with Humane AI Pin?
There are four ways to interact with the device, including the AI-powered voice assistant. As mentioned, there is no wake word, meaning users must long-press the touch area (the second way to interact) to provide voice input. With a built-in ultra-wide RGB camera, the AI Pin can also recognize multiple hand gestures, such as pinching fingers. Finally, it can also project a small laser ink screen, ideally on the user’s palm, held in front of the AI pin.
Does Humane AI Pin provide cellular connection?
Humane also provides on-device network reception in collaboration with T-Mobile, one of the largest service providers in the United States. Under the hood, the device has a Snapdragon chipset to power AI experiments efficiently and quickly. A speaker on the device can respond to queries or play music. When input, optical or audio sensors are active, the Trust Light indicates that it is collecting data. AI Pin’s operating system does not host applications. Instead, it selects the right AI for particular queries, eliminating the need to search or download apps.
What can you use it for?
The laser ink projector can project a small screen onto the user’s hand, displaying time, weather, date/day, etc. What’s interesting is that the device’s conversational AI has real-time access to the Internet. Users can send personalized messages, ask the device to read notifications, ask it to scan text messages for specific details, make a hands-free phone call, use it for live translations, scan objects like foods and ask questions like how many calories or proteins it has, and so on.
AI Pin can click pictures and record videos
AI Pin can also act as a first-person camera to capture still images and videos to record memories. However, this ability will be unlocked through an OTA update that will be available soon. With the device, users have access to Humane.Center, a hub that allows users to monitor and manage their data. It helps users configure the device and create a profile.
The company has also designed a few AI Pin accessories, including a clip that fits on larger clothing, a latch that allows users to wear AI Pin on lighter clothing, protective cases or shields, and a charging case that can hold the device and refuel more than once.
AI pin pricing and availability
Humane AI Pin is available for $699, which includes the device, a charger, a cable, an adapter, a charging case, and an additional battery booster. Users will also benefit from syncing and storing their data, such as photos and videos, and have access to a suite of AI-powered services for $24 per month. The device will ship in early 2024. Pre-orders for AI Pin will begin on November 16, 2023. There is no word yet on the availability of the device in India.
