After talking about his next device, aiming to replace smartphones, Human finally made it official. The tech startup has launched AI Pin, a high-tech wearable priced at $699 (as revealed yesterday). Users will also need to subscribe to Humane’s services for a monthly fee of $24, which includes a phone number and data coverage through T-Mobile’s network. The AI Pin, scheduled for delivery in early 2024 with pre-orders beginning November 16, consists of a square device and a magnetically attached battery.

The AI Pin allows photo capture and text messaging, and can project a visual interface onto the user’s palm via a laser projector. It also includes a virtual assistant, similar to ChatGPT, and aims to reduce reliance on traditional smartphones.

The AI Pin’s standout features are concentrated in the curved top of the device. This area hosts a 13 MP ultra-wide camera, light and depth sensors and a laser projector. The AI Pin’s laser-ink display is designed to follow the movements of your palm, turning your hand into a canvas for text, graphics, and user interface elements. The laser projector works at a distance of 20 to 40 cm.

Placed atop the AI Pin is the Trust Light, designed to notify you and those nearby when the device is in operation. This light can change between five colors, indicating various tasks performed by the AI Pin. For example, a green light means a photo capture, pink indicates a phone call in progress, orange indicates an activated microphone, and white indicates scanning activities.
Another light indicator at the top of the AI Pin is the ultra-private beacon. This discreet feature is designed to notify you of incoming messages and essential alerts.

The Pin’s main function is to make connections with AI models through software called AI Mic. The AI Pin’s microphone array discerns the context of your input, identifies your needs, and directs the information to the appropriate AI process.
To answer your questions, the AI Pin uses a built-in speaker called the Personic Speaker. It uses a head-related transfer function (HRTF) to create a personally optimized sound bubble at a fixed distance, regardless of audio intensity. Additionally, you can interact with AI experiences using the AI Pin’s touchpad, made from Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and designed to understand a range of finger gestures.

One of the most notable features of AI Pin is its ability to translate in real time. According to Humane, the AI Pin automatically detects the language spoken around you, then translates your words into the local dialect so you can communicate easily.
