Diego Simeone extends contract with Atlético Madrid to 2027

Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone signed a three-year contract extension on Thursday that will take him until 2027 with the club.

Simeone, appointed head coach of Atleti in December 2011, is the most successful coach in the club’s history.

During his 12 years in charge of Atlético Madrid, he won two La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey, two Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups and one Spanish Super Cup. He also led the club to two UEFA Champions League finals.

Sources told ESPN last week that Simeone’s agent and sister, Natalia Simeone, had met with Atleti general manager Miguel Ángel Gil Marín to discuss a new contract for the coach.

Simeone received a lucrative offer to coach Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli last summer, but sources told ESPN his preference was to stay with the team he made more than 100 appearances for over two periods as a player.

The 53-year-old coached River Plate, among other clubs in his native Argentina, and spent a short period at Italian club Catania before eventually moving to Atlético Madrid.

After their 6-0 victory against Celtic on Sunday, Atleti now occupy fourth place in the table, six points behind leaders Girona.

Simeone’s side host Villarreal on Sunday in La Liga.
