Top Story: Maxwell 201* wins the Australian miracle and a semi-final

Australia 293 for 7 (Maxwell 201*) beat Afghanistan 291 for 5 (Ibrahim 129*, Rashid 35*) by three wickets

At one point Australia were 91 for 7 chasing 292. Then Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell smashed his way to a double century and not only did they win the match but also sealed their place in the semi-final of the World Cup.

After Ibrahim Zadran became the first-ever Afghan centurion to appear in a World Cup, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai destroyed Australia’s top spot by threatening to script a famous victory at Wankhede. But Maxwell stepped up with a sensational 201 not out, 179 of which were scored as part of an unbroken 202-run partnership with his captain Pat Cummins, to turn the script around. The result confirmed Australia’s place in the final four, alongside hosts India and South Africa, and left Afghanistan heartbroken.

Match analysis: Maxwell is the greatest in adversity to inflict the final blow on Australia

Glenn Maxwell was down. He limped for his 147th run – the 35th single of his innings – and collapsed on the Wankhede turf, clutching his hamstring, his face contorted in pain. As his muscles flexed and contracted, Maxwell jerked to the ground, his movements involuntary as his lower body made its own decision.

While trying to calm him down, Australian physiotherapist Nick Jones explained to Maxwell that if he wandered off, it would likely be difficult to get back up. In the distance, Adam Zampa came down the locker room stairs, ready to take Maxwell’s place. And that’s when he decided it wasn’t going to happen.

Maxwell was down, but he wasn’t out and he certainly wasn’t going to choose to be.

It was obviously very hot when we played today, and I didn’t I haven’t really done a lot of high-intensity exercise in the heat, and that certainly took a toll on me today.

“We came up with a plan to stay at the same end for a little while until I could get some movement back, and luckily I was able to hold on until the end.”

“European Champions… you will never sing that!”

That’s right, here’s one in the eyes of all those wannabes for glory in the upper echelons of the World Cup rankings, lining up to be invited to the big ball in Ahmedabad in two weeks’ time. There’s a more punishing title up for grabs in Pune on Wednesday – so puny, in fact, that it’s not even an official title, unlike the one an England amateur team won at the European Cricket Championships in Malaga last month. And look who they beat by eight wickets in the final… none other than the defending champions, the Netherlands! Stop this prank! Cricket is already home!

More seriously, England would be only too happy to get away from this miserable campaign now.

Scott Edwards, Ryan Cook and Ryan van Niekerk – their captain, coach and bowling coach – will know exactly what’s at stake when they strategize.

“All three of us will review the videos individually,” Edwards told ESPNcricinfo. “We do quite a few things on our own. We’ll have our own ideas and plans, then we all get together, choose the best ones, and shape them together. Usually one of us has to buy dinner, and then we leave of the.
