WhatsApp is rolling out a new beta update bringing the version to 2.23.24.10. It brings a more secure experience to WhatsApp with an additional layer of email verification. Previously announced in beta versions v2.23.16.15 and v2.23.18.19 for Android, the update features a new section called “Email Address” for added security.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will prompt users to enter their email address. For now, this is an optional feature but WhatsApp recommends users to enable it to prevent any type of intrusion into your account. Additionally, you will need to provide the email when logging in on another device which generates a verification code much like the SMS in the previous method.

No, you will not be able to create a WhatsApp account using an email address since the phone number will be the primary and unique identifier. Email, on the other hand, adds a layer of security designed for users to use as an alternative to access their WhatsApp accounts, as you can now use WhatsApp on multiple companion devices, refining the overall experience.

Note that the feature has been rolled out in limited capacity to some beta testers. You can install the latest WhatsApp for Android beta from the Google Play Store to get your hands on this feature and more will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Additionally, you might also have the same functionality in the previous iteration, so take a look via WhatsApp Settings >> Account >> Email Address.
