Instagram recently doubled down on its “Reels” strategy by launching new features that will hopefully encourage users to use them more often. The last of these features is the ability to add song lyrics while editing, as you already can on “Stories”.

The announcement was made today via the IG Updates and Meta on the app itself by Instagram boss Adam Mosseri and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The feature was added after Powers noticed users were manually adding them to Reels.

To add song lyrics when editing your Instagram Reels, tap the Music button, add a song, then swipe left to add the lyrics to the song you added. The steps seem simple and straightforward enough that anyone can follow them.

The ability to add song lyrics has been available on Instagram Stories for a while now, so it’s unclear why it took so long to bring this same feature to Reels. For those who don’t know, Reels differ from Instagram Stories in that Reels are public, while Stories are only shown to your followers.

However, Stories and Reels never really had feature parity, perhaps due to the more intimate nature of Stories. That said, Instagram has continued to make Reels more feature-rich as it faces increasing competition from rival platforms, such as TikTok.
More recently, Instagram also launched new tools to make it easy for its users to create new Reels, including new and improved templates and a template browser organized by categories. This browser can help users find the appropriate template for their content as it is organized by Recommended, Trending, and Saved categories.

We can expect more from Instagram when it comes to Reels, as promised by the company in the last update. New features are expected to follow in the coming weeks, such as the ability to automatically add text and transitions that were used in a previous reel.
