Jon Rahm, the world’s No. 3 golfer, has withdrawn from participation in the inaugural season of TGL, the tech league led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

The reigning Masters champion confirmed in a statement on

In a statement to ESPN, TGL said it was working to replace Rahm on its 24-man roster.

“Jon is one of the most talented players in the game and will be missed during TGL’s inaugural season,” TGL officials said in the release. “We understand that players must balance many facets of their professional and personal lives, respect Jon’s choice and wish him well.”

Sources told ESPN on Thursday that Rahm, who lives in Arizona, decided to back out of his commitment in part because of the travel required to get to South Florida.

Rahm’s announcement comes the same day the Boston Common Golf franchise announced its full roster: world No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott and Tyrrell Hatton.

“I am excited to join Boston Common Golf and represent the rich sports culture of Boston and New England,” McIlroy said in a statement. “TGL brings a unique dimension to the game, and I look forward to joining Adam, Keegan and Tyrrell as teammates. This is a fantastic opportunity that will give us all a chance to form lasting bonds and foster regional pride that you don’t often see in golf.”

The Boston franchise is owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool FC and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
