South Sydney legend Nathan Merritt has reportedly woken from his coma after being on life support for the past week.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Merritt emerged from the coma Friday afternoon and has since spoken with his father.
Merritt is said to be in a stable condition at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital – where his family has kept a bedside vigil – after suffering an adverse reaction to prescribed painkillers last Friday.

He collapsed while staying with a family member and was reportedly still in critical condition just a few days ago.
Souths released a statement on social media on Thursday, revealing that Merritt’s condition had “improved.”
The statement added: “We are very pleased to hear directly from his immediate family that Merro’s condition is improving. He is being cared for by the best doctors and is in the thoughts of everyone connected to the Rabbitohs.
“The recovery will be slow, but it’s a battle he’s fighting with all our support. Keep fighting hard with that South Sydney spirit, Merro! You’re still a Rabbitoh! #974. »
