A former NRL player accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Brisbane is in mediation with the complainant, a court has been told.
Former Brisbane Bronco Teui ‘TC’ Robati has been charged with one count of sexual assault, following an alleged incident at a Brisbane nightclub in December last year.
Previously, Mr Robati’s name was suppressed due to Queensland’s long-standing laws prohibiting the identification of people accused of time-barred sexual offenses before they are brought before a higher court.
However, new laws were introduced on October 3, allowing those accused of these offenses to be publicly named.
Mr Teui did not appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, where his case was briefly discussed.
The court was told Mr Teui and the complainant, who cannot be named, were involved in ongoing legal mediation in a bid to resolve the matter.
Judicial mediation can only take place if the complainant has consented to it and the respondent intends to take responsibility for his actions.
The matter was adjourned for further mention on January 12.
At a previous court appearance in March this year, the court was told the Director of Public Prosecutions would likely transfer the case to his office if mediation failed.
Mr Teui remains free on bail.
He was cut from the Brisbane Broncos in February before the start of the NRL season.
“As part of the process of finalizing this season’s squad, forward TC Robati has been released from his contract with the club,” the Brisbane Broncos confirmed in their February statement.
Mr Robati had made just 17 appearances in two seasons with the Broncos.
He was resigned from the club in January following a sexual assault charge and another motoring case, which has since been resolved.
