Nottingham Panthers’ Adam Johnson dies after freak accident

American ice hockey forward Adam Johnson died after an accident during the Nottingham Panthers’ match against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday, the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) club announced on Sunday.

Johnson, 29, received emergency treatment following an accident during the match in Sheffield, England.

Reports indicate his neck was cut by a skate blade during the incident, although this could not immediately be verified.

The match was stopped in the 35th minute as paramedics treated Johnson, who was later taken to hospital, and fans were asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency.

“Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during the Sheffield match last night,” the club said in a statement.

“Adam, our number 47, was not only an exceptional ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.

“The club will miss him greatly and will never forget him.”

The Panthers sent their condolences to Johnson’s family, partner and friends, as well as fans and staff of both clubs.

Johnson joined the Panthers in August this year after playing in Germany, Sweden as well as the United States.

The EIHL released a statement confirming Johnson’s death and postponed all games scheduled for Sunday.
