Indian telecom service provider Reliance Jio has introduced the country’s first satellite broadband service. With JioSpaceFiber, the company aims to provide high-speed internet access to remote areas located in challenging geographies. Jio showcased the new technology at the India Mobile Congress on Friday, October 27, 2023.

JioSpaceFiber will provide low latency internet to remote locations

Reliance Jio already has two broadband services available in various parts of the country – JioFiber and JioAirFiber. With the new JioSpaceFiber, Reliance aims to provide reliable, low-latency and high-speed internet that allows them to access entertainment and other internet services regardless of location.

Reliance partners with SES for satellites

To provide satellite connectivity, Reliance is partnering with SES for its Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites, which the company says is the only MEO constellation capable of delivering truly Gigabit, high-end services from space. Speed. For this, SES will provide access to its O3b satellites and the new O3b mPOWER satellites. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the solution, Jio has already connected four of the country’s most remote locations, including Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odissa and Jorhat in Assam.

Although the company is yet to reveal the prices, it claims that the JioSpaceFiber would be affordable, like its other broadband services. For all intents and purposes, JioSpaceFiber is India’s version of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite broadband service led by Elon Musk. Starlink quietly launched its satellite internet in India, but had to pull out due to government intervention.
