The use of passwords, a safer and more convenient way to log into websites and apps, has gained traction recently, with many apps implementing support for them. The latest of these sites is Amazon, which has started rolling out support for this new sign-in method on iOS and the web.

Amazon announcement the move today, and with it, the company’s plans to make the site easier and more secure for customers to log into their accounts. Support for passkeys is rolling out first to the iOS shopping app and desktop browsers, with support for the Android app coming soon.
To use a passcode, customers simply need to unlock their device with their fingerprint, facial scan, or lock screen PIN. Once their device is unlocked, they can confirm their identity to Amazon using their password. This makes it easier and more convenient for customers to log in, and also helps protect their accounts from phishing attacks and other security threats.

To set up a password, customers can go to their Amazon account settings and select “Sign in & Security.” Then, they can select “Configure” next to “Access Keys” and follow the on-screen instructions. Once a password has been added to an account, customers can sign in with it on any supported device or browser.

Support for passkeys is starting to be rolled out gradually today, helping in efforts to reduce the need for passwords. On this subject, Andrew Shikiar (Executive Director and Chief Marketing Officer of FIDO Alliance) said below:

Amazon says it sincerely believes that passwords are a big improvement over passwords and that the company is committed to making them the standard way to log in to websites and apps. This seems to be the current sentiment across the industry, with every company doing its part to encourage even more businesses to do the same so we can all enjoy a safer and more convenient online experience.
