Bonkers report says 2024 iPad Pro models will use LCD displays, not OLED،

A crazy new report from DigiTimes (via MacRumors) cites an industry source as saying that Apple was shelving the OLED makeover of its most premium tablet line. Instead, Apple will no longer use mini-LED backlighting for the larger-screen unit and the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models will use LCD backlighting. Based on Apple’s naming system, the mini LED display was called the “Liquid Retina XDR Display”, while both displays would now feature the “Liquid Retina Display” based on the LCD.
The DigiTimes report, which hits as often as it hits, says that the higher production costs of using mini-LED backlighting pose a “barrier to broader industry adoption.” We note, however, that the question here is whether Apple is switching the iPad Pro to OLED, and not the 11-inch mini-LED model. The report also states that Apple’s return to LCD backlighting “could be driven by the company’s focus on scalability and market penetration.

The decision to equip both iPad Pros (2024) with LCD backlighting will delay the start of production, the report says, from early next month to “early 2024 at the latest.” The article also confuses readers by stating that “Apple could launch a new iPad Pro with AMOLED displays no earlier than 2024, sourcing mainly from Samsung Display and LG Display.” This looks exactly like the OLED iPad Pro we’ve been waiting for this year and it’s unclear whether this passage should have been removed from the story.

Given DigiTimes’ track record and what switching the 12.9-inch iPad Pro from mini-LED to LCD would entail, we wouldn’t put much credence in the story without evidence from reliable sources.
