Ange Postecoglou praises Richarlison for depression honesty،
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has praised striker Richarlison for speaking publicly about his battles with depression and being open about his mental health issues.
Richarlison said therapy “saved my life” and welcomed the addition of a psychologist to Brazil's national team after admitting he suffered depression following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar .
Postecoglou said Richarlison's honesty will make a difference to other people struggling with mental health issues.
“Richy has really benefited from the support that is out there, not just for him but for others in the community. Because he has benefited from it so directly, I think he has taken responsibility to try to share that now ” Postecoglou said at a press conference. Friday.
“It always has more impact when it's someone at a high level or in a position where we think they shouldn't have problems or we see it as a sign of weakness when they seeks help and support.
“It's a credit to him. He could have handled this privately, I think going public is a brave move for him, but more importantly it's a great way for others to reach out and to ask for help when necessary.
“There's always a balance between these things. Whether it's Richy or anyone else, we all have challenges and problems in our lives, there's help you can give and hopefully -the, it shouldn't get to the point where it's so overwhelming that it takes over everything you do.
“It’s thanks to Richy that he asked for help, he got help, the right help, and now he wants others to benefit from it.”
In an interview with ESPN Brazil, Richarlison said getting psychological help after the World Cup was “the best discovery I've ever made in my life.”
“Before I went to practice I wanted to go home, I wanted to go back to my room because I don’t know what was going through my mind,” Richarlison said.
“I even went to tell my father that I was going to give up. It's a little sad to talk like that, you know?
“What I experienced after the World Cup, discovering things here at home thanks to people who had lived with me for over seven years… It’s crazy.
“To go to my dad, who was the guy who chased my dream with me, and say, ‘Dad, I want to give up,’ it’s crazy.”
Richarlison did not play for Brazil against England or Spain during the international break due to a knee injury, but Postecoglou said he would be ready for their match against Luton Town on Saturday.
“Yeah, he's fine. He had a little knee problem and we kind of managed it. Brazil managed it but he trained today and he feels good so he's available.” , said Postecoglou.
Postecoglou also confirmed that defender Micky van de Ven was available after recovering from a hamstring injury.
