Google's experimental AI assistant, Gemini, seems to be getting more useful by the day. In the latest update of the Gemini app on the Google Play Store, Google has given it new navigation skills.

As reported 9to5Googlethe Google Gemini application received a Play store updated March 25. This update brings the app to version 1.0.618909562 and includes the following notes in its changelog: “Now, when you ask for directions, Gemini will automatically start navigation with Google Maps.

This is a change from how the app has worked in the past, where this feature wasn't available natively without the help of, you guessed it, the Google Assistant. Whereas now you can just give it a command like “Navigate to xxxx”. The app will not only quickly display a summary of your route and directions to it, but will also drop you directly into Google Maps with your route ready to go in seconds.

Besides this added benefit, Gemini offers a few other updates in this version, such as the ability to set a reminder or calendar event via command. I know, this is something we've been able to do for years with Google Assistant, but we're trying to give Gemini the benefit of the doubt here. After all, it's a relatively new app. Just make sure the “Workspace” extension is enabled in your Gemini settings.

Gemini still has a long way to go to catch up to what Google Assistant can do, however, it is slowly but surely improving. The web version and mobile versions have become small but frequent updates it adds up. One thing that is clear, however, is that it can't yet completely replace the digital assistant on a smartphone, but that day is surely on its way.
