There was a time in the 2010s when ringtones were all the rage. A ringtone was not just a sound, but a way to display one's personality. Even though the buzz around ringtones has died down considerably, there are still people (like me) who like to set the ringtones of their choice. Galaxy and Pixel devices come with pre-installed ringtones while Xiaomi phones have the option to download them from the library. One can always download audio and use it as ringtone by importing it. In this guide today, we will explain how Android users can change the ringtones of their devices and messaging apps.

Change Ringtones on Android Phones (General Procedure)

Most phone manufacturers equip their devices with a multitude of ringtones for you to choose from. Android phone users can use the simple procedure below to change ringtones on most Android devices.

  • Swipe up from your Home screen to open the app drawer menu.
  • Choose the “Settings” app.
  • Scroll down to the “Sound & Vibration” menu.
  • Tap “Phone ringtone.”
  • Discover the pre-installed ringtones provided by your smartphone manufacturer.
  • Select the specific ringtone to play it.
  • Click “Save” in the upper right corner to set the ringtone as your default ringtone.

In case you don't want to choose from existing ringtones, you can import a ringtone. Just follow the steps below-

  • Go to the Phone Ringtone menu and choose “My Sounds”.
  • Click the + icon to add your ringtone.
  • Choose the audio you want to import from gallery and set it as default ringtone.

Change ringtones on Samsung Galaxy devices

  • Go to the “Settings” menu and choose “Sound & Vibration,” then “Ringtone.”
  • In the Ringtone menu, choose from a variety of sounds. Your device's current volume level and whether vibration is enabled will be at the top. If you chose a different sound, you will need to swipe down to locate it.
  • To add a custom ringtone, go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Ringtone.
  • Click the plus sign in the upper right corner.
  • The list of all available audio files will be displayed on the “Sound Picker” page. Choose the one you want to use.
  • Tap “Done”.

Samsung Galaxy devices also allow you to set a unique ringtone for a specific contact. To do this, follow these steps-

  • Open the Phone app and select “Contacts” from the bottom menu.
  • Choose the contact you want to set the ringtone for.
  • A list of icons will appear, choose “Information Icon”.
  • Click the three dots labeled More and select Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone.
  • You will be redirected to the ringtone page where you can select the ringtone you want to assign to this contact.

Change ringtones on Pixel devices

  • Go to “Settings” > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone.
  • Or you can press the volume up or down key, click three dots below the volume indicator, press the Settings button and select Phone ringtone.
  • In the Phone Ringtone menu, choose from a variety of available sounds.
  • Tap Save in the upper right corner.

To add a custom ringtone, here are the steps-

  • If you have your own audio file that you would like to use, you can make it available.
  • Create or download the audio file, then use the Google File app to locate the file by navigating to the bottom menu and choosing the Audio category.
  • Find the audio file and tap it.
  • Tap the three-dot menu icon at the top right and select “Set as ringtone”.

Change ringtones on popular messaging apps

1. WhatsApp

Third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp also allow you to change the ringtone. Here's how you can do it-

  • Open WhatsApp on your device.
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and open Settings.
  • Choose the Notifications option.
  • Scroll to Calls and choose Ringtone.
  • Open Sounds and choose a relevant melody for your incoming calls.

2. Google Dating

  • Long press the Google Meet app icon and tap to open the app info menu.
  • Choose the “Notifications” option.
  • Go to Receive 1:1 Calls.
  • Choose Sound and choose a custom ringtone from the menu.
