Google to bring Gemini Nano to Pixel 8 in the next Feature Drop 

With the launch of the Google Pixel 8 series, the search engine has promised to deliver seven years of feature updates for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 8 Pro has been rocking Gemini Nano, Google's AI for on-device generative AI, since its launch. After heavy criticism from the media and community, Google is finally offering Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8.

The Pixel 8 lacks Gemini Nano due to some unspecified “hardware restrictions” according to Google. This generated a lot of heat in the community. Since both devices have identical hardware, Google has been accused of creating artificial gaps between the two devices by limiting Gemini Nano to only the Pro model.

Despite the initial disparity, Google responded to consumer feedback by deciding to bring Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8, making its built-in AI model more widely accessible. The company announced the move in a community post on Google Support, indicating that Gemini Nano would be rolling out to the Pixel 8 as a developer option.

The community post says: “We will also be expanding the Gemini Nano rollout to Pixel 8 users as a developer option with the upcoming Pixel Feature Drop.”

Gemini Nano will open doors to new AI features, including an AI summarization feature in the Recorder app, personalized on-device wizards, offline language translation, advanced proofreading and grammar correction, advanced smart reply functionality in Gboard, and much more.

These features are just the start, and we can expect additional use cases to emerge over the coming months. These features are scheduled to roll out for the QPR3 Feature Drop, scheduled for release in June 2024.
