iOS 17.0.3 update sees mix response resolving iPhone 15 Pro overheating issues

Since the arrival of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, people have reported overheating issues that have left tech enthusiasts perplexed. Apple acknowledged the issues and was quick to release iOS 17.0.3 with the release note saying “addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to heat up more than expected.” Looks like the update is working with many reports giving positive reviews about the new update, so here’s more on that.

Did iOS 17.0.3 fix iPhone 15 Pro overheating issues?

According to the folks at ZDNet, the iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17 took a turn for the worse, turning on at 107.1°F when plugged into a 35W charging brick. For context, most of iPhones and Android devices fall between 80 and 95°F in temperature, making the iPhone 15 Pro Max a seemingly different beast.

After upgrading to iOS 17.0.3, things started to change with the highest temperature being 93.9°F, which is a huge improvement in thermal management. According to Apple, there is no hardware issue on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, rather it is a bug causing the phone to overheat. Additionally, some third-party apps like Instagram and Uber also increase the device temperature.

Possible performance improvement after iOS 17.0.3 update

According to a Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard”, its iPhone 15 Pro Max has improved performance after the deployment of iOS 17.0.3. With iOS 17.0.2, the unit scored 27,163 points, and with the upgrade it reached 27,381 points.

Likewise, FPS on Honor of Kings and similar titles reached an average of 116.9 FPS after the update. For comparison, it maxed out at 105.4 FPS under iOS 17.0.2. The temperature on the device dropped about 0.6°C on the front and 1°C on the back after the update.

There is also a reverse

According to a graphic designer based in Madrid, Spain, Gabriel Suchowolski, he upgraded from the iPhone 13 Pro Max to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. He started noticing overheating issues during heavy gaming or long calls. The camera app would cause the area around the rear camera to heat up more than the rest of the body.

Suchowolski reported that his phone reached 42°C or 107.6° after the release of iOS 17.0.3. He even noticed screen burn-in issues on his device and reported it to AppleCare+, which is currently awaiting an update. Another user from the United Kingdom – Sam Harman, noticed that his iPhone 15 Pro Max started overheating after upgrading to iOS 17.0.3, which was supposed to fix the problem.
