Baldur's Gate 3 was undoubtedly one of the biggest releases of 2023, but it appears a fourth entry is off the cards. It turns out that developer Larian Studios is looking to move away from its action RPG series.

“We are a company of big ideas”

During a speech at this year's GDC (as reported by PC gamer), Larian CEO Swen Vincke said the Baldur's Gate series “will always have a warm place in our hearts”, but the team is leaving. Vincke adds that he “won't make new expansions like everyone expects.”

Instead, the company will be moving on to something different, with an eye toward “creating something new” while taking a step back from long-running D&D games.

As such, anyone expecting anything after Baldur's Gate 3 might be disappointed, with Vincke confirming that there won't be a follow-up in the series, at least from Larian.

However, the franchise may not be entirely dead. The Dungeons & Dragons license for BG3 is held by Wizards of the Coast, who may decide to hand over a new game project to another studio in the future.

There's no telling at this point what this new idea will develop, so it's hard to say how much it might deviate from the fantasy RPG series.

When it was released in August last year, Baldur's Gate 3 received immense praise. It went on to win several awards, including Best Storytelling and Best Visual Design at the Golden Joystick Awards, as well as Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023.
