Google adds Predictive Back gesture to Gmail in Android 14،

Google was supposed to bring the Predictive Back feature system-wide on Android 14. With this gesture, an Android user using the back gesture can see a preview of the page they are returning to. This was a big problem for app developers, as it turned out that many times an Android user, not knowing exactly where the back gesture would take them, would accidentally exit an app without having intend to do so. And this led to the app receiving negative metrics that its developer was not happy with.

As we noted, the predictive back gesture shows an Android user a preview of where they will be directed if they use the back gesture. There are only three possible destinations: a previous page in the same application, a previous application, or the home screen. The back gesture on Android requires the user to slowly swipe left from the right side of the screen until a left-facing arrow inside a circle appears. Once the user removes their finger from the screen, they return to the previous page. The same thing is accomplished by slowly swiping right from the left side of the screen, releasing when a right-facing arrow inside a circle appears on the screen.

Google still hasn't enabled predictive feedback with Android 14 and you still have to activate it by going to Settings > Developer Options > Predictive Back Animations: Enable system animations for a predictive back. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Google recently spotted the Predictive Back Gesture in Gmail version 2024.03.03.x when closing an email. When you start the back gesture, the email you are closing shrinks to show rounded corners and a small preview of the page you are returning to appears behind the page you are currently viewing.
The Predictive Back gesture can also be spotted on the monthly overview and day view of Google Calendar. Hopefully we'll see the feature appear on more system apps, and as Google requires third-party app developers to use it, we could see the Predictive Back feature eventually become available on most Android apps.
