The arrests follow a Statement from the Football Federation yesterday, condemning the song of tragedy.
“We are aware of the tragedy reported by the chants chanted during [Sunday’s] FA Cup match between Manchester United and Liverpool, and we will liaise and support Greater Manchester Police,” the statement said.
“We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chanting in football stadiums, and we are determined to stamp out this behavior.
“This is completely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game. This must stop, and we support all clubs and their supporters who are trying to eradicate this from the terraces.”
Chief Inspector James Collins, in charge of the match, said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of supporters who came out to enjoy what proved to be an intense match until the very last minute.
“The arrests made are the result of our proactive, zero-tolerance approach to ensuring that genuine supporters and spectators can enjoy the match safely.
“GMP can confirm that a 21-year-old man and a 59-year-old man have been arrested in connection with tragic chanting. Incidents relating to tragic chanting will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.”
