Six Nations: Scotland need to get mentally stronger, Russell says،

Scotland must become mentally stronger to turn intermittently brilliant form into more wins, captain Finn Russell said after his side ended their Six Nations campaign with more defeats than wins following the 17-13 defeat on Saturday against Ireland.

Russell and coach Gregor Townsend praised the Scottish defense which made favorites Ireland work to secure their second consecutive Six Nations title, but also lamented a campaign which promised more.

“The mentality we had today, especially in defense, was brilliant, but throughout the campaign we have to get stronger mentally, we have to improve and put in performances week in, week out,” Russell said during of a press conference.

“We have had periods in this competition where we have been brilliant, but at the same time we have had periods where we have allowed teams to take the lead. We are progressing and winning just two games is difficult.”

Townsend said Scotland were closer to being genuine Six Nations title contenders, having had chances to win all five games, with all three defeats coming by one score.

He admitted the Blues underperformed in last weekend's 31-29 defeat to Italy and again lamented a late, controversial call from a televised match official that cost them a victory against France.

“Two wins is not what we set out to do and what we think this team is capable of, but today was a really good finish to the championship in terms of performance,” Townsend said .

“I think the evidence is there. We're always looking, like any team, to back up our performances. It's difficult in the Six Nations and especially in this Six Nations with the quality of the teams we're up against If you do, To get your performance right, you will be really challenged to win this match.

“That’s the reality and we have to be at our best every time we play.”
