WhatsApp could expand its app lock feature beyond simple biometric authentication to give those who don't have devices equipped with biometric sensors different options for securing their chats.

The latest WhatsApp beta introduces a new unlock toggle with biometrics that allows the use of fingerprint, face, or other unique identifiers when enabled.

Currently, WhatsApp users can only use biometric authentication, limiting the functionality to certain devices only. Adding unique IDs allows anyone using WhatsApp to secure their chats using a password on the device.

According to WABetaInfo, the new feature is available to some users who have installed WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.6.20. Unfortunately, it seems that many users are reporting that their app crashes quite often after installing this update, but it's unclear if the addition of the new security feature is the real culprit.

Even though the implementation doesn't seem perfect, we believe such a feature is necessary given that a large number of phone users do not own a device with biometric sensors.
