If you own a Pixel Watch, you've probably appreciated the convenience of the Watch Unlock feature. This convenient option automatically unlocks your Android phone when your smartwatch is nearby. Currently it uses Bluetooth technology, which can sometimes cause a slight delay in unlocking. However, it looks like Google is working on a major update for the next Pixel Watch.

According to an APK analysis carried out by 9to5Google, recent code updates in the Play Services app indicate that Google is preparing to improve Watch Unlock using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. UWB offers faster and more accurate location tracking than standard Bluetooth, meaning your Pixel Watch could unlock your phone faster and more reliably.

There are, however, some caveats to consider. Currently, international regulations require Ultra Wideband (UWB) to be disabled in specific locations. For this reason, Google is proactive in including code that automatically disables the upgraded Watch Unlock feature when you are in an unsupported region. Additionally, to take advantage of UWB Watch Unlock, your phone and smartwatch need compatible hardware. While recent “Pro” models of Google Pixel phones feature UWB, both generations of the Pixel Watch not. This has led some to believe that the next Pixel Watch 3, likely launching this fall, will almost certainly include ultra-wideband connectivity.

Of course, this has not been officially confirmed by Google. Even with the leaks we've seen so far, very little is known about the features expected to arrive with the Pixel Watch 3.

We saw a recent leak claiming that the watch will be available in two sizes this time, a standard 41mm version and a new 45mm variant, as well as the possibility that it will launch with Wear OS 5. If these two leaks turn out to be correct, coupled with a faster and smoother Watch Unlock experience, the Pixel Watch 3 appears to be a worthy competitor to its Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch counterparts.
