Apple has been working for years on a way to allow the Apple Watch to offer users non-invasive blood sugar readings. This test would be used by insulin-dependent diabetics to help them determine how much insulin they should inject before each meal. Currently, a diabetic must use a sharp tool called a lancet to draw blood and place that blood on an expensive test strip that is inserted into a glucometer. It is a painful and expensive test.
Besides Apple, Samsung is also reportedly working on a non-invasive blood sugar test for its smartwatches. However, it appears that the technology needed to achieve this is not yet available. There is an alternative you can consider if you have diabetes that does not require a prescription. According to 9to5Macthe FDA has “cleared for sale” the first over-the-counter (OTC) continuous glucose monitor (CGM), named the Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System.

This system uses a wearable sensor that reads the user's blood sugar and, via Bluetooth, sends readings every 15 minutes to an app on the user's smartphone or other smart device. Here's the problem though. As strange as it may seem, the Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is NOT intended for insulin-dependent diabetics. “The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is an integrated CGM (iCGM) intended for anyone 18 years and older who does not use insulin, such as people with diabetes treating their disease with oral medications, or those without diabetes who want to better understand how diet and exercise can impact blood sugar. Each sensor can be worn for up to 15 days before needing replacement.

To give you an idea of how far Apple and Samsung may have to go before offering non-invasive blood sugar measurements on their respective smartwatches, the FDA has warned consumers not to rely on non-invasive glucose monitors at this point, as they are not reliable. . The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is expected to be commercially available next summer.
