India lost their collective spirit after former skipper Virat Kohli was made to bowl in the World Cup clash against Bangladesh.

The host nation was left shaken when Hardik Pandya was left lame while bowling the ninth over.

The all-rounder’s third ball was smashed to the ground and Pandya stuck out his right boot before slipping and falling awkwardly on his left leg.

When he was helped up, he could barely stand, let alone move freely enough to run.

So, someone needed to bowl his last three balls – so who else but King Kohli?

The decision sparked a huge backlash from fans.

In a comment, Nasser Hussain said: “Oh my word. Tell me, tell me it happens.

“They came to see Kohli the batting, that will be Kohli’s golden arm with the ball.”

While this isn’t a common occurrence, it’s not that irregular either.

Kohli beat Hong Kong in a T20 in August last year. In 2020, he played a test against New Zealand.

But while he has played 48 times in ODI cricket, he has not played in a 50-over clash since August 2017 against Sri Lanka.

For the record, Kohli’s bowling statistics are four wickets, an average of 166.25, a strike rate of 160.2 and an economy of 6.22 runs per over.

According to Cricinfo stats, Kohli is a right-arm average bowler and it is safe to say that he is a very average bowler, bowling his fastest ball at 104.2 kmph.

But he was also hit for just two runs off his three balls as the crowd chanted his name.

He was also getting a good swing and making sure he came off the top with almost no damage.

A fan said, “Virat Kohli is the most economical bowler after Jasprit Bumrah. What do you think Rohit, Virat is going bowling again!

Maybe Kohli should have bowled another one – Shardul Thakur’s 10th over made for 16 runs.

But India bounced back after finally clinching the first wicket in the 15th over with a score of 93.

On the positive side for Bangladesh, Tanzid Hasan hit his first one-day international fifty.

The 22-year-old left-hander, whose previous highest score in eight matches at this level was 16, made an impressive 51 from 43 balls, including five fours and three sixes.

Along with Liton Das, he shared an opening stand of 93 after Bangladesh stand-in captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, replacing the injured Shakib Al Hasan, won the toss.

But as wickets began to fall, India picked up the run rate, restricting Bangladesh to 8/256 in the 50 overs.

‘Special’: Kohli all his class in man of the match innings

Kohli scored an unbeaten century to help seal India’s fourth victory in four World Cup matches as the hosts beat Bangladesh by seven wickets.

Kohli reached his century and ended the match in style with a six off spinner Nasum Ahmed as he needed three runs to complete his century and India two more runs to reach a target of 257.

They got there with more than eight overs to play, finishing with 261-3. Kohli’s 48th one-day international century left him just shy of equaling Indian great Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of 49 hundreds at this level.

Kohli faced 97 balls, including six fours and four sixes, with this century his third score above fifty in four innings after contributions of 85 and 55 not out in recent pool wins over Australia and Afghanistan.

Chants of “Kohli!, Kohli!” » » went around a crowd of over 33,000 as the former captain brilliantly reached his third World Cup century against Bangladesh.

“I wanted to make a big contribution,” player of the match Kohli said at the presentation ceremony.

“I had a few fifties in the World Cup and I didn’t convert them, so I just wanted to finish the game this time.

“We understand it’s a long tournament and you have to build momentum for guys to come out and play like that.

“It’s a special feeling to play at home in front of all these people and we just want to make the most of it.”
