Samsung's success in the foldable device market is commendable. Over the years, the company has constantly improved the hardware and software needed to make a mainstream foldable phone, capturing a significant share of the emerging market. This year, the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 – two foldables with exceptional processing power and a seamless operating system experience.

Return 6 against. Flip 5: What has changed?

Although we've already released high-quality renders of the Fold 6 and Flip 6, chatter across the internet echoes the similarities between them and their predecessors. For those interested in learning more about the differences between Flip 5 and Flip 6, here's an objective view of how the new renders compare to the 2023 flip-style foldable in collaboration with @OnLeaks.

Larger camera modules

Placing the Z Flip 5 (left) and Flip 6 (right) side by side, there is a noticeable difference in the size of the camera lenses. The slightest gap between the lenses and the thicker metal rings surrounding them could mean one of two things. Either the company has opted for larger camera sensors that allow in more light and improve camera performance, or this is an aesthetic change that means nothing.

Last month, some reports claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could come with a 50 MP main camera, which could be larger than the Flip 5's current 12 MP main camera ( review ). Therefore, from a more optimistic point of view, we would expect the larger cameras to reflect a new and improved camera system on the Flip 6. The renders also suggest a different flash module.

Thinner hinge coating

Hiding the hinge of the Flip 6 is slightly thinner metal coating. While this could be related to the hinge, we haven't yet heard of any improvements in the design or mechanism. It is therefore difficult to comment on it. While we view the Flip 6 as an incremental update at best, we expect Samsung to strengthen the hinge and, if possible, remove the crease that appears on the interior foldable screen.

Flat edges

Looking at the Flip 5 (left) and Flip 6 (right) from another angle, we see a few changes. First, the Flip 6 looks sleeker, thanks to its flat, square edges. The Flip 5 has rounded edges that blend into the side frame. As we mentioned in our previous article, the Flip 6 houses two microphones on the top bezel. Additionally, the front earpiece is much larger than what users got on the last generation foldable. Although the renders are not to scale, it appears that the volume buttons and power button have also lost weight.

Yes, the company has taken a conservative approach to this year's foldable products, but as Nothing CEO Carl Pei says, maintaining a similar design helps a brand establish its identity. Apple iPhones have been doing this for several years, as have Google Pixel phones. We expect this to be one of those cases where looking at the images won't reveal much difference, but holding the phones in hand should make a difference.
