CIRP said in today's report that Android users switching to iPhone are male and earn less money than existing iPhone users. Most of these iPhone buyers opt for an existing model to save money; That said, a surprising share will buy the latest Pro or Pro Max model.

In the 12 months ending December 2023, 29% of Android users who switched to iPhone purchased the iPhone SE 3, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13/iPhone 13 mini models. What's interesting here is that the percentage of iPhone owners upgrading to one of these models was less than 21% over the same period. In 2023, while 51% of Android users purchased an iPhone 14 series model (this line was the newest available for 75% of 2023), 56% of those who upgraded their iPhone found themselves with the iPhone14iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
CIRP found that 37% of Android users have purchased a iPhone14 or the iPhone 15 Pro series model, while the number of iPhone users switching to one of these models was 43%. So why do Android users switching to an iPhone usually start with one of the cheaper phones? CIRP suggests that one reason could be that many of them come from cheaper Android phones and older, non-Pro iPhone models fit their budget. That makes sense.

Additionally, CIRP suggests that Android users might not feel the need to buy the latest iPhone model with all the new features. CIRP writes that for these new iPhone users, “entering the walled garden, using iMessage and FaceTime, and perhaps pairing their phone with AirPods is a sufficient upgrade.”
