Google Maps’ glanceable directions are finally rolling out widely, but a year late،

After nearly a year of delay, Google Maps' visible directions feature is finally rolling out to Android and iOS devices around the world. This long-awaited addition makes your browsing experience more convenient and secure by bringing vital information about your trip straight to your lock screen.

Google initially announced this feature in February 2023, but the rollout took much longer than expected. After some sporadic sightings over the past summer, there were no further updates on its development until January 2024, when it was reported that the feature had begun appearing silently for users of the whole world. Now, according to Android Fontthis system is now widely deployed.

What are these “visible directions”?

Visible directions give you a quick overview of your trip with essential updates like real-time estimated time of arrival (ETA) and turn-by-turn navigation prompts. You can track your progress along the route overview even without starting a full-fledged navigation, making it ideal for confirming your route or when you're in familiar territory. The maps will also automatically adjust your route if you decide to take a detour without any manual intervention needed, ensuring you stay on track even if unexpected changes occur.

Visible directions also make navigation less distracting, meaning you won't need to constantly unlock your phone to check your progress. This is especially beneficial when driving, making your journeys safer.
