On Monday, February 26, 2024, Sony launched the Alpha 9 III camera featuring the world's first full-frame global shutter image sensor. With this new feature, the camera can shoot burst images at up to 120 frames per second without any distortion or blackout. Out of the box, the Alpha 9 III comes with a full-frame (~24.6 MP) stacked Exm or RS CMOS sensor with global shutter. The camera is powered by the BIONZ XR image processing engine. When it comes to autofocus, it has a 693-point phase-detection AF system with 93% sensor coverage and 425 contrast-detection AF points.

The camera's viewfinder is an OLED screen with 9.44 million dots and a refresh rate of 120 frames per second. It has a magnification ratio of 0.7x. Users also have a 3.0-inch, 1.44 million-dot tilting touchscreen to view images and navigate the settings menu. Regarding video recording, the camera can film in a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at up to 120 frames per second in full-frame mode.

The camera's connectivity and data transfer features include 5GHz Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, 1000BASE-T LAN port, and dual SD card slots for greater shooting flexibility. Finally, the included battery lasts up to 760 shots on the OLED viewfinder and up to 870 shots on the touchscreen LCD. The body of the Sony Alpha 9 III weighs 737 grams.

Interestingly, the camera comes with a pre-capture feature that allows users to rewind up to a second and capture the moment before pressing the shutter button.

Improved image processing speed allows the Sony Alpha 9 III to capture approximately 390 Fine JPED images in a continuous burst of 30 frames per second. On the other hand, the customizable focus areas have been expanded to include from XS to XL. When it comes to video recording, the camera is the first in the Alpha series that allows the user to record high frame rate 4K 120p videos without in-sensor cropping. In S-Log3 mode, the camera can import and display the user's preferred LUT.
