When Apple introduced Dynamic Island at the 2022 event, the first reaction from some livestream viewers was awe and excitement. Others were not impressed. With Dynamic Island available on all four iPhone 15 models this year, more iPhone users than ever have taken advantage of the feature. Although I was one of those excited about the Dynamic Island when it was revealed, for the most part I was disappointed with it.

According to information obtained by MacRumors, before deciding on the final location and capabilities of Dynamic Island, Apple considered other locations and formats. Based on the information received, MacRumors created renders showing what these other concepts would have looked like if Apple had decided to take a different route to replacing the notch.

One of the alternatives to Dynamic Island would have placed a vertical screen on the right side of the screen displaying some of the icons normally found on the status bar at the top right of the screen. This displayed the time, cellular signal strength (the famous bars), Wi-Fi indicator, screen brightness, volume and battery life indicator. When this screen was not used, it did not appear.

Another possibility, and one that I really like, is to hide the notch in a large black status bar at the top of the screen. The time is displayed on the left side with the status bar icons on the right. Since the phone has an OLED panel, creating the black color on the screen requires turning off the appropriate pixels, which would also lead to improved battery life.

When Apple created Dynamic Island, it originally covered the top of the screen, spanning almost the entire width of the screen. But Apple decided it was best for Dynamic Island to change size if necessary. The company also considered other features for Dynamic Island, including one that displayed the phone's volume, another that displayed a row of system shortcuts, and another that used a novel layout for ongoing phone calls.
